At least the Mini has something in front of the steering wheel. The Echo never made sense to me.

I like symmetry as much as the next guy, but this is too far.

Radio and HVAC are centered for the purpose of being accessible from either side. But the instrument gauges don’t belong there; they are the driver’s concern.

It makes sense to the bean counters. Right-hand drive or left-hand drive it only requires one dashboard. Just swap left and right; you don’t need to supply a complete reverse design.

YES! GOD, YES! This is my number one automotive pet peeve. In the Toyotas it’s like they knew the drivers would just be confused by all the numbers or not care to know anything about what’s happening at all. In the MINIs... I got nothing. Is it supposed to be cute? Aren’t MINIs supposed to be driver-oriented cars? Why wouldn’t you put all the info right in front of the driver? It’s not even cool like the old tachs on the hoods of muscle cars. It’s fucking stupid.

The original mini had center speedo, so if it ain’t broke...

It’s cheaper to engineer for LHD and RHD markets if you don’t have to design the dash twice.

Don’t like it. Though it is convenient for the passenger... My grandma’s Hyundai has this setup, and it’s rather interesting to see all of the stats even when you're not driving!

Well the Echo doesn’t have a tach and you won’t be breaking speed records for how slow it is, same thing with the Hyundai but because it’s an auto you don’t really need to see the tach. But I agree the instruments in front of the driver makes a lot more sense.

Also in my case the 2 cars I mentioned have the instruments slightly facing towards the driver, the ones you mentioned have them flat so i’m guessing harder to see them at a glance.

Everything that's on the center display is also in front of the driver on the digital/analog display directly behind the steering wheel. The center display has been a bit better integrated on the third gen minis (f series) however, a little less cute a bit more useful (more BMW influence)

In cheap economy cars, I get it. It makes it easier to build LHD and RHD versions without having to change too much of the dashboard. When it’s simply a design affectation to make your nearly $30k car feel more like an economy car, as in the MINI, it kind of gets annoying.

I just grabbed two that I knew of. All of that center instrument stuff is an abomination, IMHO. Clock in the center? Makes sense. Climate controls and entertainment? Makes sense. Key instruments for piloting the automobile? Duh!
